Impact of Exploration

Exploration can result in positive and negative consequences

The impact of exploration

Research Process Resources

Researchers inquire into people, issues and events by seeking answers to their questions.

Pose and develop questions to guide an inquiry about people, events and/or issues:
- Before, during and after an inquiry to frame and guide the stages.
- By developing different types of questions for different purposes.
- To guide the identification and location of useful sources for an investigation or project, eg. Is this source useful?, What resources do we need to conduct this project?

Locate and collect relevant information from primary sources (including surveys) and secondary sources including the use of search engines and simple search functions.

Organise and represent information and data in a range of formats.
Sequence information about people and/or events using annotated timelines and/or flowcharts showing the stages of a process.

Examine multiple perspectives on actions, events and issues in the past and present.

Acknowledge the ideas of others by providing a list of sources.

Mapping

Spacial thinking and mapping skills help people understand the world around them at different scales

Use intermediate cardinal compass points (i.e., NE, NW, SE, SW) to provide direction

Use latitude and longitude to locate something on a map or globe

Use absolute distance to measure distance on a map

Identify and analyze different features on thematic maps

Why People Explore

Exploration can result in positive and negative consequences

Factors that motivate people to explore

Considering different perspectives before, during and after an exploration can deepen understanding and lead to better decision making

There are often three primary motivations for exploration: knowledge-seeking, wealth and power.

Innovation and Exploration

Exploration can lead to new technology and innovation

Advancements in technology and innovation that have resulted form or led to exploration
